Bühnenkonzert

Louis Vierne, Symphonie No. 6
Wednesday, 20.05.26 - 15:00

In 2025, Ute Rost and Gunther Rost launched the Bühnenkonzerte ('stage concerts') at the Stefaniensaal in Graz. In this format, the audience is seated on the stage, experiencing the Stefaniensaal organ up close while learning the instrument, its music, and the people who have shaped its history.

The current season, SYMPHONIQUE, is dedicated to highlights of the French symphonic organ tradition. With Louis Vierne's Symphony No. 6 the Bühnenkonzerte and Orgelfrühling Steiermark present a joint project for the first time.

Louis Vierne, who served for decades as organist at Notre-Dame Cathedral, composed his Sixth Symphony in 1930 during a period of profound personal upheaval. Dedicated to the memory of an American friend and colleague, the work offers a glimpse of how deeply his music resonates with the human heart.
The entire symphony is masterfully woven from a single thematic idea. As a late work, it represents a highly developed symphonic form in which Vierne unites the French tradition with impressions and musical impulses from across the Atlantic, creating a compelling, intense, and striking musical language.
