University Church Maria am Leech

The 'Leechkirche' is one of the most important early Gothic sacred buildings in Austria. Built in the late 13th century by the Teutonic Order, the church is a tall, light-filled space inspired by French Gothic architecture and reminiscent of the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris.

The site itself has a much older history: archaeological discoveries show that it was already an important burial ground in pre-Christian times. The present church therefore stands on a place that has held religious and cultural significance for thousands of years.

Particularly remarkable are the medieval stained-glass windows in the choir as well as numerous artworks from different periods. Since 1985, the Leechkirche has served as the university church of the Diocese of Graz-Seckau and today is a vibrant venue for worship, concerts, and cultural events.
